C'e' una scena impro in Israele ben piu' sviluppata di quanto non si sarebbe immaginato. Gia' avevamo avuto modo di segnalare la prova solistica al sax soprano di Ariel Shibolet, Metal Tube & Consciousness; in quest'occasione, invece, il contrabbassista Jean Claude Jones da' vita a una serie di duetti con nove musicisti, che egli chiama affettuosamente friends. Jones e' tra i promotori dell'associazione Kadima, collettivo nato per promuovere la musica creativa e improvvisata in Israele: e' con questo spirito che nasce un disco come With Friends.

Proprio Ariel Shibolet e' uno degli sparring partner di Jones in questa vetrina di brevi momenti improvvisativi, che, a dire il vero, soffre un po' della "sindrome dell'assaggio": i brani si susseguono velocemente, facendo presto confondere le tracce delle singole personalita', riducendo cosi' le potenzialita' dell'interazione. Emerge tuttavia il profilo musicale di Jean Claude Jones, impegnato al contrabbasso e all'elettronica. Jones si muove con una certa cupezza sui binari di un'improvvisazione "colta", soprattutto sui piani del timbro, dell'uso dello strumento, della costruzione dei frammenti musicali. E' proprio quando le frasi rinunciano, appunto, alla loro frammentarieta', che la musica acquisisce un altro respiro, l'ascolto si fa piu' coinvolgente, come accade nell'ipnotico duetto con il violoncello di Yuval Mesner, improvvisazione dalle venature "folk" (nel senso della tradizione "folk" ebraica).

In ogni caso si tratta di un disco che rifiuta un'identita' legata all'origine culturale degli artisti coinvolti, e guarda invece alla tradizione colta e improvvisativa occidentale.

There is a improvisative scene in Israel which is much more developed than anybody could imagine. We already had chance to point out the solistic work of Ariel Shibolet at the soprano sax, Metal Tube & Consciousness; this time double bassist Jean Claude Jones proposes a collection of duets with nine musicians, mentioned as friends in the title. Jones is one of the promoters of Kadima association, born to promote creative and improvised music of Israel: with this intention the recording With Friends is born.

Ariel Shibolet is one of the sparring partners of Jones in this list of short improvisational moments which, to be honest, suffer a bit of the "syndrome of the sample": the tunes are quickly following, causing soon a loss of the single personalities, reducing therefore the potentiality of interaction. The musical shape of Jean Claude Jones, at the double bass and electronics,  is anyway coming out. Jones is playing with the dark intention of a educated improvisation, mainly for the timbre, for the use of the instrument and for the construction of the musical fragments. When the phrases avoid to be fragmented, music gains a new breath, the listening is more involving, like in the hypnotic duet with Yuval Mesner, improvvisation with "folk" influences (meaning the ebriac "folk" tradition).

In any case this is a CD which refuses an identity linked to the origin of the artists and refers to the western educated tradition and improvisation.
